Overall

Easily the worst of the eight online sportsbooks available to New Jersey residents, playMGM rushed its app to market, which is evident by the poor user experience.

Bets Offered

Poor line posting speeds puts a damper on a decent offering of bets.

playMGM currently offers straight bets, futures, props, parlays, round robins, and teasers. Bet variety is decent, with both team and limited player props offered. It is worth noting playMGM takes way too long to post the lines on available bets. If you like betting on games the day before they’re played, or even earlier in the day they’re played, playMGM is not for you. Their line posting speed on all bets is incredibly slow. Maximum betting limits vary by account, and bettors have the option to increase or decrease their deposit limit.

Category Rank: (Leaders: SugarHouse, 888sport, Bovada)

Benefits: playMGM offers a few basic team and player props.

Considerations: playMGM takes longer than any other sportsbook to post lines, even for moneyline, spread, and total bets. They also don’t offer odds on many college games where one team is vastly favorited over another.

Odds

playMGM offers average odds, placing 8th out of 17 sportsbooks in our 2019 odds rankings. playMGM tends to offer almost all spread and total bets with at a -20 vig, meaning if there are two teams the odds will almost always be one of the following combinations: Team 1 (-110) Team 2 (-110), Team 1 (-105) Team 2 (-115), Team 1 (+100) Team 2 (-120).

playMGM top odds: NCAAF moneyline bets (2nd), NBA spread bets (3rd), NCAAB moneyline bets (3rd)

playMGM worst odds: soccer moneyline bets (15th), NCAAB total bets (12th), NFL moneyline bets (13th), NHL spread bets (13th)

Ranking Process- For this review, odds testing data spanning the NFL, NCAAF, NBA, NCAAB, MLB, NHL, and top soccer leagues was collected. Odds data measures over 1,400 games across nine offshore sportsbooks and eight US regulated sportsbooks. Moneyline, spread, and total bets were analyzed and weighted to comprise a 2019 ranking for each league, with moneyline bets typically receiving over 50% of the weighting.

There are 16-17 sportsbooks ranked for each league, except the MLB, where only 13 sportsbooks were ranked. This is due to some US regulated sportsbooks rolling out after the MLB season concluded.

Mobile Betting

My testing was focused on the iOS app, which I used on my iPhone 7.

On a high level, the app is limited, offering no support and very few details and rules on betting. It feels like playMGM rushed to release an app to avoid missing out on revenue instead of building a platform that is user-friendly and reliable.

While the app tries to be unique with its design, the overall functionality is frustrating. Users have to click on an individual game to view the lines, meaning you can’t just scroll through a slate of NBA games to compare lines, you have to click on each game individually. This is frustrating if you’re trying to place a parlay bet.

The trending bets part of the app lets users view top bets, as well as search for bets based on the team name. This also becomes annoying since abbreviations are made for team names, which often leads to multiple searches.

Customer Support

playMGM is the only US regulated sportsbook not to have any form of dedicated customer support. The app refers customers to the playMGM email address, which covers the casino as well as poker. There is no live chat support or phone support, and no support is dedicated to sports betting.

Education

Again it appears playMGM cut corners to release a product as soon as possible, without keeping the customer in mind. There is no education offered, feel free to move to the next category.

playMGM is the only sportsbook reviewed on this site with absolutely no education. There are not even simple definitions or explanations of betting types. If you are a first-time sports bettor bet somewhere else.

Reputation

MGM has been a trusted name in the casino industry for many years. Although playMGM is new to sports betting, the name brings respect and trustworthiness.

Other Notes

Promotions

There are not currently any promotions for sports bettors. First-time depositors to playMGM can get a $25 free play and 100% deposit match up to $1,000. This has a 6X rollover and can only be used for playMGM games. Nothing is said of sports betting.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a sportsbook, look elsewhere. playMGM hastily released their sports betting app just to say they have one. The app offers very little, and it is clear playMGM is more interested in attracting online casino or poker customers.

Methodology

For the BettingBuck.com annual best online sportsbooks review published in February 2019, a total of 2,300 data points were collected over six months and used to score sportsbooks. Additionally, odds data was collected for each sportsbook on over 1,400 bets to give each sportsbook a comparative odds ranking.
