FanDuel was founded as a Daily Fantasy Sports company in 2009, and garnered over six million registered users in less than 10 years. Then, in May 2018, when the Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PAPSA), FanDuel was one of the first companies to make headlines. Paddy Power Betfair, one of Europe’s largest gaming companies, merged with FanDuel. Paddy Power contributed $154 million for a 61% stake in the combined company, with the option to eventually own all of it.

FanDuel currently has a physical sportsbook at the Meadowlands racetrack in New Jersey. Their online/mobile sportsbook is powered by IGT, a gambling solutions company that processed over $12 billion of sports bets worldwide in 2017.

Sports Offered

FanDuel currently offers only 11 sports, which is fewer than other sports betting companies in New Jersey, such as SugarHouse and 888.

FanDuel offers coverage on the most popular US sports leagues, and a ton of international soccer leagues. I expect FanDuel to add more sports as the seasons change, and will update the table above to reflect any new additions.

Bets Offered

FanDuel currently offers spread, moneyline, total, parlay, round robin, future, and live bets, with more to come.

The company offers a wide range of game props and bets, depending on the sport. NFL games offer over 100 bets in addition to moneyline, spread, and total bets! Some of these bets include Any Time Touchdown Scorer, Last Touchdown Scorer, Both Teams to Score 10 Points, 1st Quarter Field Goal [Yes/No], 2nd Quarter Money Line, Shortest Successful Field Goal, and many more. The slate of bets had me craving a Sunday afternoon full of football and wings.

Regular season NHL games offer around 50 additional bets, while NBA/NHL games offer over 100. Examples of NBA bets include points/assists/rebounds (player specific), 1st quarter race to 10 points, 3rd quarter team to score first, first basket of the game (player specific), and additional spreads.

FanDuel has a matchup countdown graphic for games being played later in the day. The graphic transitions between a live countdown to the game and different statistics. For an NBA game the graphic shifts between a live countdown, win probability, last 10 game records, total win/loss records for the season, points per game scored/allowed and season-long shooting percentages. The moving graphic is one of those things I didn’t know I wanted until it was given to me. Now it’s something I want every time I go to bet.

The variety of bets FanDuel offers has gotten progressively better since the sportsbook first went online in September of 2018. The company stacks up to top competitors with the assorted team and player props it offers.

Cash Out

FanDuel describes its cash out feature with the following definition: The cash out feature allows you to amend your original bet and lock in a profit or loss by settling your bet (or a portion of your bet) early, without having to wait for the event to finish.

This allows users to cash out a winning ticket early to ensure they make some money or cash out a losing ticket early to minimize their losses. This feature is game-changer and is available at most New Jersey sportsbooks.

No offshore websites reviewed on our site can compete with this feature. Knowing you can cash out early in a bet incentivizes you to watch every game you bet on, or at least get scoring updates. As a resident of Michigan, it’s nice knowing I can minimize my losses when the Detroit Lions start letting the game slip away.

Daily Odds Boost

FanDuel offers bettors a daily odds boost on a few select bets each day. The odds boosts act like a sale at a retail store, offering more incentive to make each bet. For example, FanDuel discounted the odds of Michael Thomas scoring a touchdown in week 11 from -180 to -120. They also boosted the odds of the Chargers, Saints, and Bears all winning from +198 to +230.

Daily Odds Boost
Boosted odds from 12/5/18.

The daily odds boost is popular amongst US-regulated sportsbooks such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and SugarHouse. These bets are exciting, fun, and absent from offshore sportsbooks.

Min/Max Lines

FanDuel does not currently have set betting limits for their online sportsbook. Instead, they have maximum payouts for each sport, which vary by bet type. I will add maximum betting lines to this section if they become available.

Odds

FanDuel offers decent odds, ranking 6th out of 17 sportsbooks in our 2019 odds rankings.

FanDuel top odds: NFL moneyline bets (3rd), MLB spread and total bets (2nd), NBA moneyline bets (3rd), NFL spread bets (4th)

FanDuel worst odds: NHL moneyline bets (10th), soccer moneyline odds (11th)

Ranking Process- For this review, odds testing data spanning the NFL, NCAAF, NBA, NCAAB, MLB, NHL, and top soccer leagues was collected. Odds data measures over 1,400 games across nine offshore sportsbooks and eight US regulated sportsbooks. Moneyline, spread, and total bets were analyzed and weighted to comprise a 2019 ranking for each league, with moneyline bets typically receiving over 50% of the weighting.

There are 16-17 sportsbooks ranked for each league, except the MLB, where only 13 sportsbooks were ranked. This is due to some US regulated sportsbooks rolling out after the MLB season concluded.

Banking Options and Fees

FanDuel makes banking simple, with no fees and $10 minimum deposits and withdrawals. The only fees bettors incur are third-party fees that may come from banking methods such as PayNearMe.

Deposit Methods

FanDuel Sportsbook offers more deposit options than the daily fantasy sports part of the company. In addition to the table below, FanDuel allows players to deposit money with a FanDuel prepaid card, PayPal, ACH (echeck), Online Bank Transfer, PayNearMe, and check.

It is clear the live betting menu was designed for the mobile experience. The menu is easy to navigate and offers a variety of bets, most of which are the same ones available before the game starts.

I was pleased to see FanDuel has a live match tracker that follows games in real time. The match tracker has a live clock, displays the score by quarter, and even shows which team is attacking in real time. For NFL games, the match tracker even listed the last play, total plays and yards on the drive, and the down and distance. This feature is awesome, and I can’t wait to see how it develops over time.

FanDuel Sportsbook App

FanDuel offers residents of New Jersey a complete mobile experience, with online website functionality, as well as a mobile app for Android and iPhone users.

The FanDuel website operates smoothly by maintaining a simple website structure. The mobile app, which I tested on my iPhone 7 and iPad, functions well with few discernable differences from the website.

Not all customer support and educational pages are completely transferred over, often causing the app to enter FanDuel’s pages online. Aside from that, FanDuel offers players a well-rounded mobile experience.

Customer Support

FanDuel Sportsbook is currently using BetFair’s customer support structure. BetFair support is both established and knowledgeable about what FanDuel Sportsbook is offering and how customers go about navigating the site. They aren’t as friendly as other sportsbooks, but are capable and helpful in completing requests.

FanDuel currently offers email responses in 24 hours and 24/7 live chat support. They don’t currently have any dedicated phone support.

Education and Research

FanDuel’s education consists of explaining spread, moneyline, total, parlay, and teaser bets. The guide for spread, moneyline, and total bets is well done, while the parlay and teaser guides are too short and need more detailed description. FanDuel must improve on educating its new users going forward.

When FanDuel entered the sports betting landscape it introduced The Duel, an extension of the FanDuel website that covers daily fantasy sports and sports betting. The Duel provides users advice, injury reports, and articles on both DFS and sports betting. The Duel is clearly in its infancy, but shows a lot of potential, especially if you play daily fantasy sports.

Reputation

Paddy Power Betfair is well established and respected in Europe, and FanDuel is one of the largest daily fantasy sports websites in America. Bettors have nothing to worry about, since they are placing their money with two gambling powerhouses that are regulated by a US entity.

During an NFL game in September, FanDuel had a glitch in its software, causing a small number of bets to be placed at 750 to 1 odds instead of 6 to 1 odds. The glitch lasted only 18 seconds but allowed a handful of bettors to place a ticket at the 750 to 1 odds. Initially, FanDuel said it would not honor the tickets at the 750 to 1 odds, but would pay out the 6 to 1 odds that were supposed to be offered. After receiving blowback from the media, FanDuel changed its mind and honored all tickets at the 750 to 1 odds, paying out more than $80,000. This is the only potential hiccup FanDuel has experienced, and they handled everything very well.

Final Thoughts

FanDuel provides New Jersey residents a complete sports betting experience; offering great odds, a variety of bets with some amazing features, and easy and reliable banking on both desktops and mobile devices. How they choose to grow in the next year with Paddy Power will cement their status as a market leader or follower. At the end of 2018, FanDuel has loads of opportunity, such as enhancing The Duel, adding more sports, and solidifying their mobile experience.
