Each state has the power to legalize sports betting due to the Supreme Court overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. This decision was made in May of 2018. Since then New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Mississippi, and New Mexico have all legalized sports betting to some extent. Another 30+ states have introduced some form of legislation to legalize sports betting, including Washington.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Washington?

No. Sports betting is currently not legal in Washington. There are two bills in Congress that would permit some form of sports betting in the Evergreen State if legalized.

What Would Legal Sports Betting Look Like in Washington?

Washington legislators introduced HB 1992 and HB 1975 in February of 2019. The two bills both aim to legalize sports wagering in some capacity.

HB 1975 would allow tribal casinos to accept sports wagers. The bill would also allow tribal casinos to accept online bets while on the grounds of the casino. Aside from that, mobile sports betting is not included in this bill.

HB 1992 would authorize sports wagering at racetracks licensed by the Washington state horse racing commission, as well as tribal casinos. The bill does not include any mobile sports betting. Aside from this, limited information is included in the bill.

Would the bills legalize online sports betting in Washington?

No, unfortunately neither of the two bills introduced allow for statewide mobile betting.

Would the bills legalize online poker?

No, the bills would not legalize online poker.

Washington Online Gambling FAQ

There are currently no forms of legal online gambling for residents of Washington to enjoy aside from horse racing. Washington has some of the strictest gambling laws. In fact, in 2006 the state made it a felony to play online casino games and poker.

Is betting on horse racing legal in Washington?

Yes, it is legal to bet on horse racing in Washington. Sites like TwinSpires and BetAmerica accept wagers from residents of the Evergreen State.

Are daily fantasy sports legal in Washington?

No, Daily Fantasy Sports, such as FanDuel and DraftKings are not legal in Washington.

Are offshore sportsbooks legal in Washington?

No, offshore sportsbooks such as Bovada are not legal in Washington. Offshore sportsbooks do accept residents of Washington as clients. Although BettingBuck always recommends betting with legal sportsbooks, we do review a handful of offshore sites like Bovada, 5Dimes, and MyBookie.
