Sports Chalk (Issue No.2) - Rhode Island Mobile Sports Betting Gets Approved

Joey Shadeck

Rhode Island mobile betting and March Madness have been the two hottest topics news-wise in the last few weeks. After four days of non-stop college hoops, 16 teams are still alive seeking a tournament win.

In Sports Chalk issue no 1. we discussed the sports betting legislation introduced in Iowa and Indiana. Since then, both bills are awaiting a vote from the house. The Iowa bill received an amendment which would prohibit live betting on Iowa student-athletes, as well require in-person signup to open an account. This newsletter covers stories from 03/11/19 to 03/25/19.

Recent Legislature - Rhode Island Mobile Sports Betting Gets Approved

Rhode Island Sports Betting

Currently, residents of Rhode Island can bet on sports at the Twin River Tiverton and Twin River Lincoln casinos. Governor Monday, March 25th Governor Raimondo signed a bill that legalizes mobile sports betting in the state.

Unfortunately, residents will have to wait for a Twin River mobile app to be developed and released, which could take until November of 2019 at the latest. As of right now, this will be the only mobile option available.

While having mobile betting is better than not having it, I can't help but feel Rhode Island citizens will be missing out on the opportunity to find a sportsbook that best suits their needs. Having multiple providers only drives competition, ultimately creating a better product, but at this point in time the state is focused on doing everything in-house. Let's not forget Rhode Island charges a whopping 51% tax on spots betting operators, the highest in the nation.
