The Supreme Court gave each state the power to legalize sports betting in May of 2018 when they overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. Governor Bullock signed a bill that brought legal sports betting to the Treasure State on May 3rd, 2019.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Montana?

Yes, sports betting is currently legal in the state of Montana. Montana became the first state to legalize sports wagering in 2019, approving a wagering system that accepts bets through mobile applications and betting kiosks. The first bets could be taken as early as the fall of 2019, before the start of the 2019-2020 NFL season.

Is online sports betting legal in Montana?

Yes, online gambling is legal in Montana. Mobile operators must first be approved by the state lottery. The Montana Lottery has the final verdict on whether or not they will approve apps like DraftKings, or limit betting to kiosks throughout the state.

What Will Legal Sports Betting Look Like in Montana?

Bill HB 725 passed Congress in early May, putting the Montana Lottery in charge of sports betting. Under this sports betting bill, the state lottery and wagering commission will approve and deny potential operators. Legal sports betting in Montana will either be done through a mobile application, or a betting kiosk in an approved bar, restaurant, or establishment.

Are daily fantasy sports legal in Montana?

No, daily fantasy sports are currently illegal in Montana. Neither of the two bills focused on sports betting includes any provisions to legalize daily fantasy sports. Operators such as FanDuel and DraftKings will be able to provide sports betting to citizens, but not daily fantasy sports.

Are offshore sportsbooks legal in Montana?

No, offshore sportsbooks such as Bovada are not legal in Montana. Offshore sportsbooks do accept residents of Montana as clients. Although BettingBuck always recommends betting with legal sportsbooks, we do review a handful of offshore sites like Bovada, 5Dimes, and MyBookie.
