Each state has the power to legalize sports betting due to the Supreme Court overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. This decision was made in May of 2018. Since then New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Mississippi, and New Mexico have all legalized sports betting to some extent. Another 30+ states have introduced some form of legislation to legalize sports betting, including Louisiana.

Louisiana currently has multiple bills in Congress regarding the legalization and taxation of both sports betting and daily fantasy sports. Louisiana is currently one of a few select states that don't allow daily fantasy sports.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Louisiana?

No. Sports betting is currently not legal in Louisiana. There is currently legislation that would legalize sports betting in the Bayou State.

What Would Legal Sports Betting Look Like in Louisiana?

The Louisiana bill would allow riverboats, racetracks, and casinos to apply for a license to offer sports wagering. Louisiana currently has 17 active casinos, according to wikipedia.

As far as taxes are concerned, operators would have to pay an 8% state tax on proceeds. Of the 8%, 4% would go to the state general fund, while the other 4% would go to the Early Childhood Education Fund.

Would the bill legalize online sports betting in Louisiana?

Yes, the bill as currently written would legalize online sports betting, but only on the property of a licensed casino, riverboat or racetrack. Unfortunately, Louisiana residents won't be able to place bets from the comfort of their couch.

Does the bill prohibit any specific bets?

Yes, prohibited events include all high school sports events, electronic sports, and competitive video games. Fortunately, there is nothing prohibiting bets on Louisiana collegiate teams. Go Tigers!

No, Louisiana shut down a bill that would legalize online poker and online gambling. The bills being discussed in April of 2019 are exclusively about sports wagering and daily fantasy sports.
